Syrian Sectarian Strife Threatens to Upend Post-Assad Transition
Almost eight months since Bashar Al-Assad's fall, deadly sectarian clashes in southwestern Syria have exposed one of the biggest challenges to the country's postwar recovery — the new leader's failure to forge national unity. After fighting broke out earlier this month in the province of Suwayda between the Druze religious minority and Bedouin tribes, President Ahmed Al-Sharaa deployed forces seeking to quell the violence. But reports by independent monitors said government forces — most of whom, like Sharaa, belong to the country's Sunni Muslim majority — instead sided with their co-religionists, the Bedouin and allied militias, to target the Druze.

Syrian Presidency announces immediate and comprehensive ceasefire
The Syrian Presidency on Saturday declared an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, citing the critical circumstances facing the country and emphasizing the need to spare Syrian blood, preserve national unity, and protect the people. In a statement, the presidency called on all parties to grant state institutions and the armed forces the necessary space and authority to implement the ceasefire responsibly, ensuring stability and ending the bloodshed. The presidency urged all sides to fully comply with the decision and cease all hostilities across the country immediately, while guaranteeing the protection of civilians and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid. It also warned that any violation of the ceasefire would be considered a clear breach of national sovereignty and would be met with the necessary legal measures by the constitution and existing laws.

President Aoun reaffirms state's sole authority over arms, rejects normalization, and urges unity
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stressed the importance of national unity and cooperation between all political factions and the state during a meeting with a delegation from the Arab and International Affairs Council. He said such collaboration is essential to protect Lebanon, strengthen its institutions, and confront potential conspiracies. 'The decision to ensure the exclusivity of weapons in the hands of the state has been made and is irreversible,' Aoun stated. 'The authority to decide on matters of war and peace belongs solely to the Cabinet. Peace, for us, is the absence of war, and that is our current priority in Lebanon. As for normalization [with Israel], it is not on the table in Lebanon's current foreign policy.' President Aoun also emphasized Lebanon's commitment to maintaining good relations with Syria while underlining a mutual respect for the principle of non-interference in each other's internal affairs. He praised the role of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, noting his contribution to preserving stability, supporting state-building efforts, and reinforcing the principle of exclusive arms under state authority.
